Bolivia: Officers arrested after attempted coup
After the putsch attempt in Bolivia, security forces apprehended approximately a dozen officers. The charges could sentence them to up to 30 years in prison, said Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo to a local television station on Thursday.
The putsch was led by the former military commander, General Juan Jose Zuniga. He was dismissed on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he gathered troops on the central square of La Paz and broke open the door to the Presidential Palace, where the new commander was sworn in. However, after several hours, the police regained control, and the putsch attempt collapsed. Zuniga was arrested.
The officers involved in the coup attempt faced potential sentences of up to 30 years in prison, as outlined by Bolivia's Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo. Despite the failed coup, former military commander General Juan Jose Zuniga was still detained by the BIs (Bolivian Intelligence Service) for his role in the incident. Even after several years in prison, the impact of the coup attempt in Bolivia continues to reverberate within the country's political and social landscape.
