Munich - Body found in the Eisbach - it is probably the missing student

At the body found in the Eisbach in Munich, according to initial findings by the police, it is believed to be that of a man who has been missing for approximately one week. A police spokeswoman confirmed this. The investigators, however, declined to provide any further details.

The missing man was a 26-year-old student from Baden-Württemberg. A week ago, he was last seen with friends in the English Garden. To cool off, he then went into the Eisbach. His friends noticed he was missing after some time had passed. Divers then searched for him unsuccessfully.

On Saturday evening, hikers discovered a corpse in the Eisbach. The body was recovered and was to be examined in the forensic lab. The police also declined to comment on any findings from the autopsy.

Swimming in the Eisbach is prohibited

According to statements from the Bavarian Palace Administration, swimming in the Eisbach, as well as in the entire English Garden, is prohibited. "Swimming in the Eisbach poses a risk to life, as it is a particularly fast-flowing body of water with several weirs, uncalculable undercurrents, and small waterfalls," the administration stated.

Signs warn of the prohibition and the danger. Surfing in the Eisbach wave at the Haus der Kunst is the only exception, and it is only allowed for experienced surfers.

Fatal Accidents

There have been numerous fatal swimming accidents in the Eisbach. In 2017, for example, a 15-year-old girl was found dead in the water, and ten years prior to that, rescue services recovered a 27-year-old student who had reportedly been sucked into a whirlpool.

Despite the risks, the Eisbach remains popular among sightseers and the Munich population, especially on hot days, as an option for cooling off. Many people let themselves be carried away by the strong current from the section below the surfer wave all the way to the Tivoli Bridge, then return or take the tram.

The missing student was from Baden-Württemberg, and his weekend in Munich ended tragically in the Eisbach, a body of water known for its prohibited swimming due to its fast-flowing nature and dangerous undercurrents. Despite these warnings, numerous fatal accidents have occurred in the Eisbach, including one in 2017 involving a 15-year-old girl.
