Multiple cattle in a farm in Braunsfeld (Lahn-Dill district) have tested positive for the virus causing Blue Tongue Disease. The animals must now be isolated and treated to prevent the spread, the veterinary office announced. Additionally, the temporary closure of the farm has been ordered.

"In most cases, Blue Tongue Disease is an acute disease that can lead to high losses in the herd, prolonged illness, and significant milk reduction," explains Nina Schneider, the official veterinarian at the veterinary office. The animal disease is transmitted by biting midges. The virus was first discovered in Germany in October 2023 and has since been spreading in western Germany.

The disease is harmless to humans. Meat, milk, and products derived from them can be consumed without concern.

To mitigate the outbreak, farmers in adjacent areas are advised to pay close attention to their animal health, regularly checking for signs of Blue Tongue Disease. Implementing proper biosecurity measures, such as insect control and timely vaccination, can further support animal health and disease prevention.
