At a park in Delmenhorst, Niedersachsen, a six-member family was injured when a tree was struck by lightning. Two of the injured were in critical condition, according to a police spokesperson.

The family - an adult and five children and adolescents - had been seeking shelter under a tree in the Graftwiesen-Park when the lightning struck in the afternoon. During the rescue operation, one child and one adolescent were revived. All six family members were taken to hospitals.

According to the "Bild" newspaper, a mother with two other children sustained burn injuries. One child was so small that it was struck by the lightning on the mother's arm. A team from the emergency pastoral care also took care of the involved emergency responders, who were in shock after the incident.

Firefighters from the local Fire department in Lower Saxony arrived at the scene to assist with the emergency. International medical teams were also requested to support the overburdened local hospitals with the influx of patients.
