Bitkom: Fewer and fewer use X since Musk takeover

Fewer and fewer Germans are using the X platform (formerly Twitter) on a regular basis. Since Elon Musk took over the company, 37% of users spend less time on the platform, according to a survey conducted by Bitkom, the German information and telecommunications industry association. According to the survey, almost one in five (19 percent) of active users have stopped posting their own contributions.

Only seven percent of those surveyed use the platform more frequently or post more since Musk's takeover. Just under half (48%) of those surveyed use the platform as often as before. Almost a third (32%) of respondents intend to delete their own profile in the future, Bitkom reported. Five percent had already done so.

"The increase in fake news and hate speech and the extensive lack of content moderation on Twitter/X is having an increasingly deterrent effect on users," said Bernhard Rohleder, Managing Director of Bitkom. "Now more than ever, online platforms need trained moderators who can quickly delete reported illegal or irregular content." According to the survey, almost half (46%) of X users believe that hate speech and disinformation have increased since the Musk takeover.

The representative survey polled 1037 internet users in Germany aged 16 and over.

The decline in X usage among Germans is being observed on the former Twitter platform, following Elon Musk's takeover of the company. As reported by Bitkom, this has led to 37% of users spending less time on the platform and nearly one in five (19%) stopping their own posts.
