Biden wants to save Ukraine aid through "major compromises"

The struggle over the US budget is jeopardizing the 61.4 billion dollars that President Biden wants to give to Ukraine. He needs the approval of Congress for this. Many Republicans only want to give this if the migration policy in the USA is tightened. Biden is apparently giving in.

US President Joe Biden has signaled a willingness to compromise on migration policy in view of the blockade in the US Congress for further aid for Ukraine. He is prepared to make "major compromises" on immigration policy so that Congress can release funding for Ukraine, Biden said in a speech to members of Congress. The release of funding to support Ukraine "cannot wait any longer".

Biden had asked Parliament in October for 61.4 billion dollars (56.5 billion euros) for Ukraine. However, an agreement in the House of Representatives is being made more difficult by the fact that there is disagreement within the Republican parliamentary group on the Ukraine aid. Some Republicans, who make up the majority in the House of Representatives, are demanding a significant tightening of migration policy on the border with Mexico in return for support for a new package for Ukraine.

Democrats and Republicans were also unable to agree on a new financial package for Kiev today, Wednesday. Biden once again appealed urgently to MEPs to approve the release of additional funds for Ukraine. A failure of the vote would be the "greatest gift" to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Biden.

Biden warns of Putin's attack on NATO

"If Putin takes Ukraine, he will not stop," Biden also said at the White House. The Kremlin boss would "keep going". "He's made that pretty clear." However, if Russia were to attack a NATO member state, "then we will have something that we don't want and that we don't have today. US troops fighting Russian troops," Biden elaborated.

The United States is the most important supporter of Ukraine in the war against the Russian invasion forces. Since the start of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022, the US has already provided or pledged more than 44 billion dollars in military aid to Ukraine.

The dispute over aid to Ukraine is being played out in the US against the backdrop of the overarching struggle over the US government's overall budget. Following tough negotiations, a new interim budget was passed in mid-November, without which a budget freeze with the closure of federal agencies would have come into force. However, the transitional budget, which applies in parts until mid-January and in other parts until the beginning of February, does not contain any new aid for Ukraine.
