Biden intends to enhance asylum restrictions for Mexican immigrants in the US.

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, has implemented stricter measures for migrants attempting to cross the border from Mexico into the US illegally. The new rule stipulates that in certain cases, they will no longer be allowed to submit asylum applications. Those who do not explicitly request asylum will be expelled promptly, while those who do will undergo more thorough screening by border authorities.

This rule will take effect once the average number of illegal border crossings exceeds 2,500 per day, and will remain in effect until it falls below 1,500. However, there are exceptions to this rule, such as for unaccompanied children, people who are gravely ill or in imminent danger, and victims of human trafficking.

The immigration reform debate in the US has been ongoing for a long time, playing a significant role in the presidential election campaign. The agencies responsible for handling immigration are overburdened and struggled to process asylum applications in a timely manner. Additionally, there is a shortage of resources for newcomers, including accommodation and other forms of assistance. The Republicans accuse Democrat Biden of losing control of the southern border due to the high number of migrants, with some even referring to it as an "invasion."

Individuals fleeing poverty, violence, and political crises in their home countries are often motivated to cross the border from Mexico into the US. This migration route is considered the deadliest in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration of the United Nations (IOM). Up until recently, there had been a significant decrease in the number of people crossing the border illegally, owing to harsher enforcement measures implemented in Mexico. Nonetheless, thousands of migrants continue to enter the US daily, and experts predict a long-term rise in this trend.

The stricter measures implemented by President Biden aim to control the influx of migrants from Mexico trying to enter the US illegally and bypass asylum rules. Under the new rule, migrants may no longer be allowed to submit asylum applications in certain situations. Despite the ongoing immigration reform debate and resource constraints, concerns about border control persist, with some Republicans accusing President Biden of losing control of the US-Mexico border. Regardless, many migrants continue to cross the border, motivated by challenges in their home countries, making this route one of the deadliest worldwide.
