Biden doesn't know if he would run again without Trump

When he took office, Joe Biden was already the oldest US President of all time, and next year he wants to run for a second term. Why is that? It has to do with Donald Trump, the 81-year-old reveals.

US President Joe Biden wants to move into the White House again after the 2024 election. He would be 82 years old at the start of his second term. He has now commented on his motives. "I'm not sure I would even be running if Trump wasn't running," Biden said at a campaign event near Boston, according to journalists traveling with him. But former US President Donald Trump should not be allowed to win.

The Republican - who at 77 is also not young - wants to become his party's presidential candidate again and has a huge lead over his rivals in internal party polls. Among the Democrats, Biden is clearly the most promising candidate to win the primaries. He moved into the White House in 2021, even then as the oldest US president ever. Biden's age and his suitability to run for president again have been the subject of debate for some time, including within his own party.

In the past, Biden had often made it clear that Trump was an important reason for his renewed candidacy. In April, however, he qualified this: "I think I would still be running if he wasn't." There is still a lot of work that needs to be completed.

Praise for Cheney

Recently, the warnings of a renewed Trump presidency had become particularly loud again. Republican and Trump critic Liz Cheney warned that the USA was in danger of "sleepwalking into a dictatorship" . Biden praised "the powerful voice" of the former congresswoman. The more liberal magazine "The Atlantic" devoted an entire issue to the dangers of another Trump presidency.

Trump, on the other hand, recently turned the tables and called Biden the "destroyer" of democracy. Trump was defeated by Biden in the 2020 presidential election, but still refuses to admit his defeat and spreads the lie of electoral fraud. He is therefore facing several criminal proceedings in court - a first in US history. Last year, he even called for the constitution to be overturned on the social media platform he co-founded. He wrote: "A massive fraud of this type and scale allows for the repeal of all rules, regulations and articles, including those in the Constitution."

The Republicans, led by former President Donald Trump, who is strongly considering running for the US presidential election 2024, poses a significant challenge to President Joe Biden's bid for a second term. Biden, who would be 82 years old at the start of his second term, has expressed doubts about his candidacy without Trump in the race.

Meanwhile, Trump's criticism of Biden as a "destroyer" of democracy and refusal to admit his defeat in the 2020 election have been met with strong condemnation, with even some Republicans like Liz Cheney warning of the potential for the USA to "sleepwalk into a dictatorship." Biden has praised Cheney's "powerful voice" in these matters.
