Media reports - Biden apparently proposes far-reaching Supreme Court reform
US-President Joe Biden is reportedly considering proposals for reforming the currently conservative-majority Supreme Court of the United States. This would include possible limitations on tenure and a new ethics code, several US media reported on Tuesday (local time) citing sources privy to the plans. It is unclear whether Biden will support these measures in the near future or during a possible second term.
One of the measures reportedly under consideration is the support for a constitutional amendment that would overturn the court ruling on the president's immunity. However, these measures, according to the reports, would require bipartisan support from Congress, which is considered highly unlikely.
The Supreme Court is currently conservative-majority. In recent years, it has made several decisions against the positions of President Biden and the Democrats. This includes the overturning of the nationwide right to abortion in 2022. At the beginning of the month, the highest US court granted former President Donald Trump partial immunity in various legal disputes.
Recently, several justices of the Supreme Court have caused discussions in the US. Conservative justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas refused to recuse themselves from cases related to the 2020 election.
Alito came under pressure due to controversial flags before his private homes. Thomas faced questions about his impartiality due to his wife's involvement in the controversy over the Presidential Election 2020. She had taken Trump's false claims of election fraud to heart and advocated for the reinstatement of the right-wing populist in the presidency.
Biden's opponents in the US election campaign reacted sharply to the reports. "The Democrats are trying to interfere in the presidential elections and destroy our judicial system by attacking their political opponent, me, and our honorable Supreme Court," Trump wrote on Truth Social, where he was holding the party convention in Milwaukee at the time.
Biden's proposals for Supreme Court reform, which include potential tenure limitations and an ethics code, are largely in response to the court's conservative majority decisions that often contradict his policies and those of the Democratic party, such as the 2022 overturning of the nationwide right to abortion. This situation has even extended to former President Donald Trump, who recently received partial immunity from the Supreme Court in various legal disputes.
Should Joe Biden decide to implement these reforms, he would need to garner bipartisan support from Congress, a challenge given the current political divide, as demonstrated by the failure to pass a constitutional amendment overturning the court ruling on presidential immunity.
