Biden announced his candidacy withdrawal
Three days after announcing his withdrawal from the Presidential campaign, Joe Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office. The defense of democracy is more important than any title, he said, looking at the Republican Presidential candidate Trump.
US President Joe Biden is passing the baton to a new generation by stepping down from the Presidential race. "This is the best way to unite our nation," Biden said in a speech to the nation from the Oval Office of the White House. Such speeches from the President's office, the Oval Office, are reserved for crisis moments and major upheavals in the country. Biden's withdrawal from the Presidential race three and a half months before the election on November 5 was the latest such moment.
"The defense of democracy is more important than any title," the 81-year-old further stated. He draws strength from this and finds joy in working for the American people. But it's not about him, the Democrat emphasized. "It's about you. About your families. Your future."
Focus on the current presidency
"In the next six months, I will focus on fulfilling my duty as President," the Democrat said. His to-do list includes the reform of the Supreme Court, cancer initiatives, the defense and measures against climate change, he stated. Biden's press secretary had dismissed the idea of his resignation as President just a few hours earlier as "ridiculous."
Biden announced on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the campaign and suggested Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement. Biden's poor performance in the TV debate with Trump had plunged his administration into a trust crisis. Biden spoke haltingly, looked pale, and could not counter Trump's attacks. Among the Democrats, voices grew louder who no longer saw Biden as the suitable front runner for the November election. It was no longer just a question of whether Biden could beat Trump, but also whether he, at 81, was still fit enough to withstand another term in office.
After announcing his withdrawal from the Presidential campaign, Joe Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his potential successor for the United States Presidency Election 2024. Despite facing criticism for his poor performance in a TV debate with Trump, Biden emphasized his commitment to serve as President until his term ends, focusing on issues such as Supreme Court reform, cancer initiatives, and climate change defense.
