Beijing firmly opposes the EU's proposed import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

China strongly disagrees with the EU's imposition of taxes on Chinese electric vehicles. "We strongly oppose this action and are critically engaged," commented the Commerce Ministry in Beijing. "We urge the European side to collaborate with China in a logical and practical manner to avert an amplification of trade disputes," they further stated.

The European Commission earlier announced penalties on electric vehicles from China. These penalties could escalate to as much as 36.3% and will take effect by the end of October, initially lasting for a period of five years. Major automakers like BMW, VW, and Tesla, who manufacture in China, will encounter reduced duties.

The European Commission alleges that China offers illicit incentives to its producers and is apprehensive about potential harm to European companies, including possible factory closures or job losses. Nevertheless, Commission officials highlighted that negotiations with Beijing remain feasible to circumvent the taxes. Unfortunately, these discussions have yet to bear fruit. Instead, China instigated a disagreement with the World Trade Organization (WTO) in early August.

Manufacturers now have a provisional ten days to react. Following this, the European Commission will submit its proposal to the member states for a conclusive vote.

The Commerce Ministry in Beijing expressed "we strongly oppose this action" in response to the EU's imposition of criticism-worthy taxes on Chinese electric vehicles. The European Commission's allegations of illicit incentives from China have led to critical scrutiny and potential consequences for Chinese vehicle manufacturers in the EU market.
