Beach Tour - Beach-Volleyball: Two German teams in Olympic form
Almost two weeks before the start of the Olympics, German Beach Volleyballers Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler came close to an surprise at the Elite Tournament of the Beach Pro Series in Vienna. The team from Hamburg lost in the semifinals on Sunday against Norwegian Olympians Anders Mol and Christian Sørum after leading with a set, 21:18, 15:21, 13:15.
The German men's duo qualified for Paris then lost the bronze medal match easily to the Chileans Marco and Esteban Grimalt, 18:21, 16:18. The Elite Tournaments are the highest category of the worldwide Beach Pro Series.
Müller/Tillmann pass their Olympic test
The day before, Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann showed their good form before the Olympic tournament under the Eiffel Tower. The pair from Hamburg won the final in Vienna against the Swiss duo Joana Mäder/Anouk Verge-Depré, 21:18, 19:21. For the duo, it was their first win in the series this season. The third-place finishers at the 2022 World Championships moved into the circle of medal contenders for Paris.
"It couldn't be a better birthday present," said Cinja Tillmann, who turned 33 on Saturday. "We tried to communicate a lot, and that worked great," her partner Svenja Müller added.
Only one set loss did Müller/Tillmann have to endure at this tournament. However, the also qualified German pair Laura Ludwig and Louisa Lippmann were already eliminated in the second qualification round in Vienna.
The Beach Pro Tour also visited Paris, where the German duo of Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler participated, despite their semi-final loss in Vienna. Despite their early exit in Vienna, they looked to regroup for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
