Bangladesh Prime Minister reportedly resigns
After days of protests and riots, Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly resigned and fled to India, according to several media reports. Thousands of people are said to have stormed her official residence. Government sources say Hasina and her sister have been taken to safety. The situation in the country is explosive, said Justice Minister Anisul Huq to Reuters. He doesn't know what will happen next.
Despite a curfew, students called for a march to the capital Dhaka on Monday to increase pressure on Hasina to resign. The day before, the worst riots since the country's independence over 50 years ago left 91 people dead and hundreds injured.
Last month, students took to the streets to protest quotas in public service hiring. This escalated into protests against Hasina, who secured her fourth consecutive term in January's election, which was boycotted by the opposition.
The students planned to march towards the Headquarters in Dhaka on Monday, aiming to escalate the pressure on Prime Minister Hasina. The Headquarters, being the central location of the Bangladesh government, became a symbol of resistance for the protesters.
