In Thailand, police investigations are running at full speed regarding the death of six Vietnamese in a luxury hotel in the capital Bangkok. The bodies of three men and three women, two of whom also had US passports, were discovered in their hotel room early Tuesday evening (local time). According to the police, the room showed no signs of struggle.

However, traces of a substance were found in bags, which suggested poisoning, reported Thai media, quoting investigators. Various newspapers wrote that it might have been Cyánide (Cyanide).

Police search for seventh person

The Vietnamese had reportedly checked into several rooms at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in the city center over the weekend. The circumstances of their deaths are still unclear and raise many questions. "This was not a suicide, someone caused their death," said Police Spokesperson Thiti Saengsawang, adding that the police were looking for a seventh person who was linked to the group. "We are following every step they took since they got off the plane."

Thiti stated that the guests had not checked out of the hotel as planned on Tuesday. Hotel staff discovered the bodies while cleaning the room. According to police reports, plates with food were found on a table, most of which was still wrapped in foil. The area around the hotel, with several famous shopping malls, is popular among tourists.

Even the Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha intervened promptly in the mysterious case and held a press conference. An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death, he said. A robbery is, however, ruled out. "It is suspected that they have been dead for approximately 24 hours. At the initial inspection of the crime scene, there were no signs of robbery or violence."

The government apparently has concerns that the incident could harm tourism. Thailand relies heavily on this important economic sector and is striving to attract as many tourists as possible after the Corona pandemic.
