Balcony in Hamburg collapses
The balcony was attached to the third floor of a multi-family house from the 60s or 70s. It was not completely supported from below, but rather folded forward at a 90-degree angle. According to the fire department, it is still hanging on the building facade. They decided not to remove it during the night, but to do so during the day on Thursday or in the coming days.
All six people on the balcony, five men and one woman, fell from approximately nine meters. They were taken to the hospital. The apartments on the affected side of the house were evacuated, the firefighter said. Structural engineers must now check how to proceed. The fire department was on site together with the rescue service and the Technical Relief Agency (THW) with 60 emergency personnel.
Firefighting personnel were present at the scene to provide assistance, as the fire department was involved in the incident. Additionally, the decision to remove the collapsed balcony was left to the expertise of the fire department, to be carried out during daylight hours or in the following days.
