War risk in the Middle East - Baerbock to Golan Heights: Attacks must cease immediately
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemned the rocket attack on the Golan Heights, which are occupied by Israel, resulting in at least twelve deaths. "It is appalling that children and teenagers were killed there, who just wanted to play football. My sympathy goes out to their families," she wrote on the platform X. For months, Israeli civilians have been under fire from the Hisbollah militia and other extremists. "These despicable attacks must stop immediately. It is necessary to act calmly and wisely in this conflict. Too many people have already died," said the Green politician.
On Saturday, at least twelve people aged 10 to 20 were killed in a rocket attack in the Druze town of Madajj al-Shams, most of whom were children and teenagers. A rocket from Lebanon, of Iranian origin, reportedly hit a bustling football field there, according to Israeli statements. The Hisbollah issued a statement denying involvement in the attack. This was rejected by Israel's military. The incident caused international concern about the escalation of violence in the region.
Baerbock on X
Baerbock explicitly stated on X that the rocket attack on the Golan Heights, originating from Lebanon, poses a war danger. She expressed her concern over the deaths of children and teenagers playing football, emphasizing the need for calm and wise actions to prevent further conflict escalation. Germany, as a host nation, must advocate for peace and diplomacy in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Iran, where numerous conflicts have been ongoing. Baerbock called for an immediate end to the attacks from the Hisbollah militia and other extremists targeting Israel. She urged all parties involved to prioritize the well-being of the innocent civilians, especially children, suffering in these conflicts.
