Baerbock renounces renewed candidacy for chancellor

2021, the Greens put forward their first Chancellor candidate. Annalena Baerbock began with great ambitions but ultimately achieved rather disappointing results. On the sidelines of the NATO summit, she told CNN in an interview that there would be no second attempt next year.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock does not intend to stand as the Green Party's Chancellor candidate again. In the face of Russia's war against Ukraine and those in the Middle East, "we need more diplomacy and not less," Baerbock said on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington in an interview with US cable news channel CNN. "Others will fill the gaps," Baerbock added. Instead of being bound to the campaign as a candidate, she wanted to dedicate her full strength to her current responsibilities.

Baerbock was the first Green Party Chancellor candidate in 2021 and had ambitious plans to succeed Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. However, the Greens ultimately received only 14.7% of the votes in the election and became the junior partners of the SPD along with the FDP.

In the Federal election 2025, the Greens may need to find new Candidates for chancellor, as Annalena Baerbock has stated she will not seek the position again. Despite her disappointing results in the previous election, Baerbock's focus on diplomacy, such as her stance on Russia's war against Ukraine, has been prominent in her role as Foreign Minister.

With Baerbock stepping down as a potential candidate, politics within the Green Party and the broader German political landscape will likely undergo significant changes, as new leaders emerge with their visions for the future.
