Artificial intelligence - Axel Springer and OpenAI enter into partnership

The ChatGPT developer OpenAI and the publishing house Axel Springer want to work together on AI technologies in journalism. "Axel Springer and OpenAI are entering into a global partnership to strengthen independent journalism in the age of artificial intelligence (AI)," Springer announced in Berlin.

"This represents a significant step in both companies' commitment to use AI to improve content offerings and create new financial opportunities for a sustainable future of journalism," the statement said. "The partnership also recognizes Axel Springer' s role in contributing to OpenAI's products."

Give and take

In the future, ChatGPT users worldwide will receive summaries of selected news content from Axel Springer's media brands, including "Politico", "Business Insider" as well as "Bild" and "Welt", including otherwise paid content. ChatGPT's responses to user requests will include sources and links to the full articles "to ensure transparency and provide users with further information". The plans also provide for the use of content from Axel Springer's media brands to promote the training of OpenAI's Large Language Models.

Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner said in the press release: "We are delighted to have driven this global partnership between Axel Springer and OpenAI - the first of its kind. We will explore the possibilities of AI-enhanced journalism - to take quality, social relevance and the business model for journalism to the next level."

Senior OpenAI executive Brad Lightcap is quoted as saying: "This partnership with Axel Springer will open up new ways for people to access high-quality, up-to-date news content through our AI tools. We are keen to work closely with publishers and creators around the world to ensure they benefit from advanced AI technology and new revenue models."
