Axel Springer and OpenAI agree on cooperation
Axel Springer and ChatGPT developer OpenAI have entered into a partnership to strengthen independent journalism in times of artificial intelligence (AI). Through the partnership, ChatGPT users worldwide will receive summaries of selected news content from Axel Springer's media brands, including "Politico", "Business Insider" as well as "Bild" and "Welt", including paid content, as the Berlin-based media and technology group announced on Wednesday. Mathias Döpfner, CEO and major shareholder of Axel Springer, said the global alliance with OpenAI is the first of its kind: "We will explore the possibilities of AI-enhanced journalism - to take quality, social relevance and the business model for journalism to the next level."
The initiative aims to enrich the user experience with ChatGPT with up-to-date and reliable content on many topics. "The partnership also recognizes Axel Springer's role in contributing to OpenAI's products," it said. "We are committed to working closely with publishers and creators around the world to ensure they benefit from advanced AI technology and new revenue models," said Brad Lightcap, who is responsible for operations at OpenAI.
With the release of ChatGPT just over a year ago, OpenAI, in which the US software company Microsoft has a significant stake, kicked off the hype surrounding so-called generative AI. These programs can create complete texts based on just a few keywords, but also have a tendency to "hallucinate". Experts use this term to describe the software's ability to freely invent facts.
