- Authorities: British Plan to Surrender "Zombie Knives"
The British government is cracking down on knife violence. They're urging individuals to hand over machetes and "zombie knives" - big, ornately designed blades. Those who comply won't face any disadvantages before a planned ban, the London government mentioned.
In England and Wales, knives with such blades will be outlawed starting September 24, strengthening current regulations. "There's no justifiable reason for such a weapon to reside in our homes or walk our streets," stated Police Minister Diana Johnson.
Young lives continue to be taken in knife attacks in the UK. Recently, videos of multiple young men arguing with machetes in public sparked public outrage.
Strong Opposition Against Knife Crimes
Actor Idris Elba is advocating for stricter guidelines and more funding for youth programs through his "Don't Endanger Your Future" initiative. The government aims to decrease knife crime cases by half over a decade.
"It's absolutely essential that the public steps forward and safely surrenders their weapons," said Minister Johnson. "We're offering people a chance to do the right thing - and help make our streets safer, prevent more lives from being lost, and save many more in the future."
The surrender period for dangerous weapons is from August 26 to September 23 at police stations in England and Wales, anonymously if preferred. Only after this period will owners face penalties. The ban was initially announced by the Conservative government under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Following the announcement of the ban, the government in the United Kingdom is encouraging individuals to anonymously surrender dangerous weapons, such as machetes, at police stations in England and Wales during the specified period. Subsequently, the United Kingdom, specifically England and Wales, will outlaw knives with large, ornately designed blades, starting September 24, in an effort to reduce knife crimes.
