Authorities apprehended individuals linked to an awe-inspiring blaze at a church in northern France.
After the stunning blaze that engulfed a 19th-century church in the northern French town of Saint-Omer, authorities apprehended a suspect. The individual in question, born in 1985, has a history of arson-related incidents, as confirmed by the public prosecutor's office. They will be scrutinized for causing criminal damage using hazardous methods with a religious motive.
The blaze erupted on Monday night within the sacristy of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Approximately 120 firefighters were dispatched to extinguish the flames. Videos circulating on online platforms captured the entire church tower engulfed in flames, eventually collapsing, and the complete destruction of the roof. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Over 50 locals were relocated for safety purposes.
As per the city's statement, the church, which was dedicated in 1859 and underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2018, showcased neo-Gothic-style furniture within its walls. The prefecture assured that 20 religious artifacts were safeguarded. "Once again, our religious heritage falls victim to fire," Culture Minister Rachida Dati expressed on the digital platform X.
The church's destruction was severely highlighted in the evening's fireworks display, as the explosion of colors reflected off the burning building. Following the investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had plans to set off more fireworks inside the church, aiming to cause further damage.
