Following a storm, the 4000-resident town of Deutschfeistritz in Austria urged everyone to shelter in place due to a potentially deadly situation. Along with the ongoing floods, yet another weather front with up to 100 liters of rain per square meter is forecast, the town declared via Facebook.
The town center is only accessible via boats, the "Kleine Zeitung" divulged. Several motorists were caught in their vehicles, but were later saved, said a spokesperson for the paper. Photos revealed that water surges were shoving cars against house walls.
On Saturday, after significant rainfall, the Ubelbach stream flowing through the town morphed into a turbulent torrent. In a local school, the Red Cross established a relief station for essential items. Similarly, in neighboring small towns in Styria, civil defense alerts were set off owing to flooding. As of yet, authorities have not disclosed any fatalities.
In the vicinity, a landslide transpired on a motorway on Saturday. The Asfinag motorway operator mandated the closure of the expressway due to earth and gravel avalanches, as per details.
