Misfortune in Down Under - Australia: Two men die at world-famous waterfall

At one of the most famous waterfalls in Australia, two swimmers have drowned. The two men were reportedly missing in the morning (local time) in the natural pool under the Millaa Millaa Falls in tropical Queensland, reported the Australian broadcaster ABC. After an extensive search involving a rescue helicopter, the bodies of the men between 20 and 30 years old were recovered about three hours later.

Exact details of the accident are still unclear. "Apparently one man got into difficulties and a second tried to help him. Sadly, both men lost their lives", said police spokesman Jason Smith.

Accidents are rare

A third man reportedly witnessed the events from the shore and is in shock, it was said. The men were reportedly on an outing and did not come from the area.

Normally, the paradise-like Millaa Millaa Falls, surrounded by tropical rainforest, are known as a quiet bathing spot and a tourist attraction in the high northern part of Queensland. "As far as I know, there has been no such rescue operation or deaths in Millaa Millaa for many, many years", said Smith.

The 18.3 meter high waterfall is part of the so-called Waterfall Circuit in the popular tourist region Atherton Tablelands, to which the picturesque Ellinjaa Falls and the Zillie Falls also belong. The region is about 100 kilometers southwest of Cairns.

The tragic incident took place at the Millaa Millaa Falls, a well-known tourist attraction in Queensland, Australia, which is managed by the Tourism industry. Despite being a popular spot for swimming and bathing, this incident marked a rare occurrence at the Millaa Millaa Falls. The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) reported the misfortune, stating that the accident involved two men who were visiting the area.
