Attack on Israeli embassy in Belgrade - attacker shot dead
An unidentified perpetrator shot a Serbian police officer of the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade with a crossbow. The policeman, hit by the arrow in the neck, retaliated with his firearm and fatally wounded the attacker, reported RTS citing the Prosecutor's Office. The Serbian police officer from the Gendarmerie was operated on in the hospital, his condition was reportedly stable, according to the report.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic labeled the attack as a terrorist act. Prime Minister Milos Vucetic strongly condemned the "despicable terrorist attack" and stated that "Serbia is capable of decisively reacting to the threat of terrorism," according to RTS. The Israeli Foreign Ministry also referred to it as a terrorist act attempt. No embassy personnel were injured, the embassy was temporarily closed.
The attacker died from the injuries inflicted by the police officer's firearm. The police officer acted in self-defense, according to the Prosecutor's Office. The identity of the attacker and the details of the attack were still under investigation. The arrow from the crossbow was surgically removed from the policeman in the hospital, reported RTS citing hospital doctors.
The attack on the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade was perpetrated by the deceased attacker. Following this incident, a strong message of condemnation against terrorism was sent by Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučić.
