At WWDC, Apple Unveiled Each New Safari Function
During Apple's WWDC 2024 keynote, the company shared exciting updates about Safari on macOS 15 Sequoia, including a Viewer mode to hide distractions while watching videos and a feature that summarizes articles while you read them. Read on to discover more about the upcoming Safari features for your Mac.
Scaling back distractions with Viewer mode
Safari's upcoming Viewer mode works similarly to Reader mode, removing clutter and allowing you to focus on video content. When watching a video on a webpage, Safari on macOS 15 Sequoia will automatically detect this and hide the rest of the page, enlarging the video to fill as much space as possible in your Safari window. You can exit Viewer mode by simply clicking out of the video.
Apple's keynote showed how this feature could be handy for videos on some websites, but it might struggle with custom video players used by others. We'll have to wait and see how well Viewer mode performs in practice.
Speed-reading articles with summaries
Apple's new feature is designed to save time when reading long articles. Get the gist of an article without reading every single word with Safari's upcoming summarization function. While it's not a replacement for reading the whole article, the feature briefly highlights key points to help you understand the main ideas.
Machine learning for a smarter browsing experience
Safari will also leverage machine learning to improve your browsing experience. For example, when perusing a website with information about a hotel, the browser will provide a map location card with a button to quickly navigate to that spot via Apple Maps. Or, while reading an article about a movie, Safari might show a movie information card instead.
