At the Democratic gathering, Biden delivered his speech.

The Chicago convention was predicted to be Joe Biden's triumphant presidential inauguration. Nevertheless, in July, succumbing to significant pressure, he decided to withdraw from the presidential contest. Consequently, he is obligated to champion another candidate.

It was an immense privilege for me to act as your President, Joe Biden.

Chicago (AP) – Supporters of ousted U.S. Democrat leader Joe Biden celebrated his comeback at a convention in Chicago. Cheers and applause echoed as the 81-year-old delivered a speech, emphasizing his achievements during his about-to-end presidency and rallying the party behind the new presidential nominee, Kamala Harris. "USA," Biden declared, quoting song lyrics, "I've given my all for you."

Biden, who opted out of contesting another term in July, was accompanied by his family. Ashley's touching introduction brought tears to the Democrats' eyes – Biden dabbed his eyes with a handkerchief. "It was an honor beyond measure to serve as your president. I cherish this role, but I cherish my country even more," he said.

Biden rallies for Harris

Harris lauded Biden as a man of integrity and strength. "Selecting Kamala was my initial move (...) when I entered the race. It was the wisest decision I've ever made in my entire career," she stated. The two have formed a close bond, she added. "She's tenacious, she's seasoned, and she embodies unwavering integrity."

The 59-year-old will square off against Republican Donald Trump in the November 3 election. Her running mate is Tim Walz. As the incumbent, Biden will serve his last months in office from now until the January inauguration, marking the conclusion of his lengthy political career. The Democratic convention serves as a platform for Biden to reconcile with his party following tumultuous weeks.

First Lady expresses affection

First Lady Jill Biden openly expressed her love for her husband on stage. "Joe and I have been together for almost half a century – and there are still moments that rekindle my love for him," she shared. She attributed these moments to her husband's actions motivated by something greater than himself, citing his decision to step down from the presidency as an example.

Harris unexpectedly appeared, expressing her gratitude for Biden's "remarkable leadership" throughout the years. She was "eternally grateful" for his service to the nation and his continued efforts for America.

Clinton promotes Harris as a trailblazer

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton set a different tone on the opening night of the four-day event. She commended Harris' nomination as a significant breakthrough for the nation. America stands on the brink of shattering the highest and hardest glass ceiling, Clinton asserted, having been the first major party's presidential candidate in 2016 herself.

"We're penning a new chapter in American history," the 76-year-old said. Harris aspires to become the first woman president in U.S. history – Clinton was the first major party's female presidential candidate in 2016. Though she had aspired to become the first woman in the Oval Office, she lost to her Republican adversary, Trump.

Demonstrations accompany convention start

Monday saw large-scale pro-Palestinian protests surrounding the Democratic convention. Thousands joined a march to the venue in the afternoon, protesting the Israeli military's actions in Gaza and U.S. military support for Israel.

Backed by diverse organizations, the protest attracted a sizable police presence guarding the march. CNN reported, citing police sources, that four individuals were detained for breaching a security barrier near the event site. Generally, the demonstration remained peaceful.

The United States will be closely watching the election battle between Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump on November 3. Despite stepping down from his presidency, Joe Biden will continue to serve until the January inauguration, marking the conclusion of his lengthy political career in The United States.
