At least nine dead after storms in Turkey
At least nine people have lost their lives in severe storms and heavy rain in Turkey. According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, four of the nine fatalities were found in the province of Zonguldak in north-western Turkey. Five other people, including three children, died in floods in the south-eastern provinces of Batman and Diyarbakir.
A cargo ship with twelve Turkish crew members on board also sank in the Black Sea during the storm on Sunday. According to the Interior Minister, the body of a sailor was recovered on Monday morning off the port city of Eregli in Zonguldak. After the storm subsided, the search for the eleven missing sailors could also begin.
Another ship flying the flag of Cameroon had also sunk off the Turkish Black Sea coast on Sunday. The freighter was torn in two by the force of the waves, but the crew was able to be brought to safety beforehand.
According to the interior minister, wind speeds of 130 to 140 kilometers per hour and waves eight to nine meters high were measured in the region during the storm.
The storms in Turkey have reportedly claimed the lives of at least eleven seafarers. Besides the nine individuals mentioned earlier, two crew members from a Cameroonian ship perished in the Black Sea. As for the Turkish cargo ship, despite the recovery of one body, the remaining eleven seafarers remain missing.
