Misfortune in the Caribbean - At least 40 deaths in fire on migrant boat in Haiti

Along Haiti's Coast, a Boat Carrying Over 80 Migrants Caught Fire. At least 40 People Died, According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Haiti's Coast Guard managed to rescue 41 Survivors, 11 of whom were taken to the hospital. The boat was reportedly on its way from the northern Haitian city of Cap-Haitien, some 250 kilometers to the Turks and Caicos Islands, on a Wednesday. Local media reported that a candle used for a Voodoo ritual on the boat may have caused the fire.

Haiti is experiencing a severe security and humanitarian crisis, as well as political chaos. Approximately half of the 11 million inhabitants of the Caribbean country are suffering from acute hunger. The President Jovenel Moïse was murdered roughly three years ago and has not been replaced. Heavily armed gangs have taken control of much of the capital Port-au-Prince. Due to their violence, over half a million Haitians have been displaced within their own country. As part of a multinational security mission against the gangs, several hundred Kenyan police are in Haiti.

IOM: Haitians Need Secure Migration Routes

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for secure and legal migration routes for Haitians, according to the IOM Haiti Chief, Grégoire Goodstein. The statement added that over 86,000 Migrants had been deported from this situation in Haiti so far this year. Several countries in the region have reported an increase in intercepted Haitian migrants in recent months.

The Bahamian military reported on a Thursday that the search for a missing boat carrying an estimated 60 migrants had been called off. This boat was believed to have set sail from the Bahamian Abaco Islands - a common stopover for Haitians - towards the USA on July 4th.
