At least 25 deaths due to flooding and landslides in China
Heavy downpours in several areas of China have caused fatal landslides and a bridge collapse. At least 25 people have been reported dead by state media, citing rescue forces.
Search and rescue teams were still looking for dozens of missing people on Monday. Over the weekend, a landslide reportedly occurred in the village of Xinhua in the southwestern province of Sichuan, sweeping away ten people. An additional 29 people were reported missing there.
Persistent rain had caused the river flowing through the district of Hanyuan to swell, carrying away 40 houses along the riverbank, according to local media. Damage to bridges was also reported, and access roads were blocked.
On the late Friday evening, cars plunged into a raging stream in the northern provincial Shaanxi, China, as parts of an autobridge collapsed, according to the state broadcaster CCTV. At least 15 deaths have been confirmed by Monday. Thirty people were reported missing by rescue teams on Saturday, and no trace was found of around 20 cars.
A photo released by the state news agency Xinhua showed a collapsed bridge section nearly submerged in brown water masses at a 90-degree angle.
The rescue operation in Xinhua village, affected by the landslide, is focusing on finding dozens of missing individuals. Due to the bridge collapse caused by floods in Shaanxi province, at least 15 people have lost their lives, with around 30 individuals still missing as of Saturday. The floods in China have resulted in the disappearance of dozens of baskets, likely from homes and businesses in the affected areas.
