At least 15 dead in suspected Islamist attacks in Burkina Faso

At least 15 people have been killed in suspected Islamist attacks in Burkina Faso, which has been rocked by jihadist violence. The "simultaneous and synchronized attacks" took place on Saturday in two districts of Diapaga, the provincial capital of Tapoa in the east of the country, a resident told the AFP news agency. The information was confirmed by security circles and a representative of civil society in the province.

The "murderous bullets" killed 15 people, including three civilian volunteers for the army and twelve civilians, said a spokesman for civil society organizations. AFP learned from security sources that the army had pushed back the attackers and "neutralized" several dozen of them. An air operation in the eastern region is underway, they said.

Burkina Faso has experienced two military coups within a few months in the past year. As in neighboring Mali, the military seized power out of dissatisfaction with the lack of success in the fight against jihadists in the country. Army captain Ibrahim Traoré, who is only 35 years old, has been in power in the West African country for around a year.

The attacks in Diapaga resulted in the loss of at least 15 civilians, with twelve among them being ordinary citizens. At least three civilian volunteers for the army also succumbed to the violence. These fatalities occurred during the simultaneous and synchronized attacks in Burkina Faso, specifically in the eastern region.
