At least 11 dead in Russian attack on supermarket
Russia is waging a barbaric war of aggression against Ukraine. Particularly heinous are attacks on civilian targets. Now, another Russian missile strikes a Ukrainian supermarket. At least 11 dead, over 30 more injured.
A Russian attack on a supermarket in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostjantyniwka has left at least 11 people dead and 37 injured, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attack in the city, around 13 kilometers from the front line, also damaged nearby residential buildings.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier reported 4 dead and 24 injured on his social media channels. "People are under the rubble. Rescue operations are underway to save them," he wrote. "The attack on the supermarket in Kostjantyniwka is another act of Russian terror. War against civilians is all they know," explained Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian president's office.
Dozens fled the supermarket grounds. Local police warned of a possible second attack. Black smoke billowed from the supermarket as police cordoned off surrounding streets. Given the images, it's likely the death toll will rise. Drones and intensified artillery fire were also heard in the area.
Kostjantyniwka, with a pre-war population of around 67,000, lies near the front in the industrial Donetsk region. The Russian army shells the city almost daily. Just Wednesday, two civilians were killed, according to Governor Vadym Fillaschkin.
Russia has long terrorized the Ukrainian civilian population with attacks on energy or heating infrastructure, residential buildings, train stations, and supermarkets. The latter often result in high casualties.
The attack on the supermarket in Kostjantyniwka, resulting in numerous casualties, is another example of Russia's terror tactics against civilian infrastructure. Russia's relentless targeting of train stations, residential buildings, and now supermarkets, demonstrates a disregard for international law and human life.
