At least 10 dead in Russian attack on supermarket
Russia is waging a barbaric war of aggression against Ukraine. Particularly heinous are attacks on civilian targets. Now, another Russian missile hits a Ukrainian supermarket. At least ten dead, over three dozen more injured.
A Russian attack on a supermarket in eastern Ukraine's Kostiantynivka has left at least 10 people dead and 35 injured, according to Ukraine's Interior Ministry. Minister Ihor Klymenko announced the new casualties on Telegram and shared photos of firefighters at the scene. The attack in the city, around 13 kilometers from the front, also damaged nearby residential buildings.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported 4 dead and 24 injured. "People are trapped under the rubble. Rescue efforts are underway to save them," he wrote. "The attack on the supermarket in Kostiantynivka is another act of Russian terror. War against civilians is all they know," explained Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian president's office.
Dozens fled the supermarket grounds. Local police warned of a possible second strike. Black smoke billowed from the supermarket as police cordoned off nearby streets. Given the scenes, the death toll is expected to rise. Drones and increased artillery fire were also reported in the area.
Kostiantynivka, with a pre-war population of around 67,000, lies near the front in the Donetsk industrial region. The Russian army shells the city almost daily. Just Wednesday, two civilians were killed, according to Governor Vadym Filashkin.
Russia has long terrorized Ukrainian civilians with attacks on energy or heating infrastructure, residential buildings, train stations and supermarkets. The latter often result in high casualties.
The Commission strongly condemns the continuous attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, including train stations and supermarkets, by the Russian military. The latest incident at a supermarket in Kostiantynivka resulted in tragic deaths and injuries.
