At Last, a Developed AI for Desktop Use

An interesting observation about artificial intelligence (AI) computers, from Chromebook Plus to Copilot, is that the majority of them have been laptops thus far. Why desktop computers cannot host AI features like Recall is something Qualcomm decided to tackle at its Computex keynote on Sunday, when they indicated they might be working on a more stationary Copilot+ PC.

Advertising its AI-driven Snapdragon X chips, Qualcomm's CEO Christiano Amon disclosed to the audience on Sunday that Snapdragon X and Copilot+ were "coming to all PC form factors." A slide he displayed conveyed the AI tool running on a laptop, a couple of tablets, and notably, a desktop computer. During AMD's keynote, they revealed Qualcomm would not be the only chip company to power Copilot+ machines, but even considering competing CPU manufacturers, this is the first time someone has hinted at a Copilot+ desktop (other than a development kit, which can be challenging to acquire and is not intended for the average user).

Unfortunately, Qualcomm did not share too much more information. The rest of their conference mainly focused on the overall benefits of Copilot+ and the enhanced performance of the Snapdragon X Elite chip.

There are two potential routes for Snapdragon X and Copilot+ on desktop PCs. The first would be akin to Apple's iMac system, where Microsoft and its partner companies simply integrate Qualcomm's laptop AI chips into a desktop device. Alternatively, Qualcomm could create a more powerful Snapdragon X chip designed to maximize the advantages of the additional space provided by a full-sized PC tower. The latter would undoubtedly require more effort, as Qualcomm would need to ensure its chip would be compatible with GPUs and other components from different PC parts manufacturers.

The initial Copilot+ laptops are slated to hit the market on June 18, with models from Dell, Asus, Microsoft, and others. Therefore, it might take some time until another wave of devices is released.
