10:01: Number of Injuries Rises After Russian Strike in Sumy

Following a Russian missile attack on Sumy in northeastern Ukraine, the number of injured has risen. Recent statistics from the Ukrainian Interior Ministry indicate eighteen injuries, among them six children. The Interior Ministry revealed this information via Telegram. Earlier (see entry 03:34), the Sumy city administration reported that at least thirteen civilians, including four children, were injured in the attack. The Russian missile strike hit a children's center for social and psychological rehabilitation as well as an orphanage in Sumy. As of August 6, the security situation in the Sumy region has deteriorated further due to the cross-border invasion into the neighboring Russian region of Kursk. With a population of over 250,000 people, the city of Sumy is located approximately 350 kilometers east of Kyiv.

09:29 AM: Ukraine: Two Injured in Russian Air Strike on Kyiv

Russia has once again bombarded Kyiv with missiles (see entries 05:39 and 06:20). At least two individuals were injured from falling missile debris, local authorities announced. Fires were ignited, and housing and infrastructure suffered damage. A nationwide air alert was effective for almost two hours until the early morning.

08:57 AM: ISW: Majority of Russians Support War in Ukraine

The Russian population remains supportive of the war in Ukraine, even after Ukraine's incursion into the Russian border region of Kursk. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), this support for the Russian military operation in Ukraine has actually increased in August. In August 2024, about 78 percent of respondents supported the war in Ukraine – an upsurge from 75 percent in July 2024 and 77 percent in June 2024. The Russian population appears undeterred by the war, allowing the Kremlin to adapt its strategy in engaging in a prolonged conflict of attrition against Ukraine, as stated by ISW analysts.

08:11 AM: Ukraine Releases Russian Loss Statistics

The Ukrainian General Staff has published updated loss figures for Russian troops in Ukraine. According to these figures, Russia has suffered approximately 617,600 soldiers in Ukraine since February 24, 2022, including 1,300 in the previous 24 hours. According to a Kyiv report, nine tanks, ten artillery systems, one multiple launch rocket system, and 30 drones were also destroyed. Overall, Russia has suffered a total of 8,601 tanks, 17,646 artillery systems, and 368 aircraft, 328 helicopters, drones, 28 ships, and one submarine since the start of the large-scale offensive, according to Ukraine. Sunday afternoon witnessed several rocket impacts on a shopping mall and an event hall in the city's eastern area.

06:20: Explosions and Fires: Intense Russian Air Strike on KyivRussia launched an attack on Ukraine with multiple drones, over ten cruise missiles, and numerous ballistic missiles, affecting Kyiv and other potential cities, as mentioned by the Ukrainian air force. Several explosions were heard in Kyiv, resulting in residents evacuating to air-raid shelters. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported escalating emergencies in the Holosiyivskyi and Solomianskyi districts. Multiple fires have been reported by Klitschko, the city's mayor, on Telegram, also supported by the city's military administration head, Serhiy Popko. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, an individual has been identified injured due to falling debris. "Retaliation will be swift. The aggressor will feel it," explained Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, on Telegram.
