The 26-year-old German resident is said to have lunged at police officers in a residential neighborhood that afternoon, brandishing two knives with blades roughly 30 centimeters long. The officers then discharged their weapons, fatally hitting the individual. The specific number of rounds fired and the type of weapon used are still being examined.
The police were summoned to the area following numerous emergency calls. Multiple witnesses reported being assaulted and threatened by the man. Due to impartiality reasons, the investigation is being handled by the police force in the neighboring city of Duisburg.
This occurrence in Moers took place four days after the suspected terror attack in Solingen, which resulted in three fatalities and eight injuries. A 26-year-old Syrian suspect, currently in custody, is suspected of being responsible for the attack, having employed a knife against a city celebration on Friday evening.
Investigators confirmed that the 26-year-old suspect was a native German without a migration background.
The police were called to the scene due to the reports of assault and threats. Despite attempts to deescalate the situation, the individual attacked the officers with the knives.
