Approximately 285,000 eels are scheduled for liberation into Berlin's waterways.
Upcoming in Berlin's waterways, about 285,000 eels are scheduled for liberation next week. These aquatic creatures, typically weighing around seven grams each, will be unleashed on Tuesday in the coastal regions of the Havel, Spree, and Dahme. The news was shared by Berlin's environmental agency within the Senate.
Over the past three decades, eel populations in Europe and particularly in Berlin have experienced a dramatic decline. The eels slated for release were netted from the mouths of French rivers that drain into the Atlantic near year-end 2023. Subsequently, they were fattened up to their release weight in an aquaculture center.
Financial support for this initiative comes from multiple sources, including the European Union, fishing rights holders, and the Senate. The total cost is approximately 93,000 euros. The aim is to bolster the native eel population.
