Apple to Unveil Novel Password App at Upcoming WWDC Event

Password managers are becoming increasingly popular for enhancing online security, with more and more companies integrating them into their software. Currently, Apple offers free password management features in iOS, Mac, and Safari, but they can be challenging to locate. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is set to launch its own Passwords app to compete with existing options like LastPass and 1Password.

Set to debut with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, Passwords will employ the same iCloud Keychain technology utilized in Apple's current password management systems. Unlike the current arrangement, the new app will make it easier for users to access this functionality, eliminating the need to delve into the Settings menu.

Essentially, with Passwords, individuals can create and save login credentials, share passwords, and even store passkeys, in addition to the standard passwords. Visitors will also be able to categorize their passwords, a feature that could streamline organization for those who currently store their logins alphabetically.

Furthermore, the app will extend its reach to handle two-factor authentication codes, a role similar to that of apps like Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator. The specifics of other potential features, like Proton Pass's dark web monitoring, remain uncertain. However, the existing functionality should already be robust, given that iCloud Keychain already enables users to store an unlimited number of passwords.

Beyond the conventional devices, the Passwords app will be compatible with the Vision Pro headset, with a potential impact on Microsoft's Credential Manager - the free password manager built into Windows and, similar to iCloud Keychain, obscured within settings apps.

Gurman anticipates announcing the new application during WWDC's keynote on Monday, although AI is likely to be the primary focus of the event.
