Apple to Discontinue Software Updates for These Gadgets

Apple possesses a stellar reputation for offering software updates for its devices long after their release date. This isn't a rare occurrence, as Apple usually extends support for iPhones, iPads, and Macs beyond the five-year mark. However, there comes a time when certain devices reach the end of their run, and they're no longer considered for future software updates. With the upcoming iOS, watchOS, macOS, and iPadOS versions, the situation is somewhat diverse.

Positive news for iPhone owners

The eagerly awaited iOS 18 will make its way to every iPhone that's currently capable of running iOS 17, relieving me of my concerns about my reliable iPhone Xs Max, which was a concern after it was excluded from updates last year. Fortunately, Apple has opted to maintain support for it for another year. However, it's worth mentioning that the exciting new Apple Intelligence features are currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro series. So, if you don't have one of those devices or plan to upgrade to the forthcoming iPhones, you'll have to miss out on Apple's AI features for now.

Bad news for Apple Watch users

Some Apple Watches will be discontinued, failing to receive the watchOS 11 update. Sadly, this includes:

  • Apple Watch Series 4
  • Apple Watch Series 5
  • First-generation Apple Watch SE

MacBook users may be disappointed

The following MacBook models won't be upgraded to macOS 15:

  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019)
  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018)

Remember that the Apple Intelligence AI features associated with macOS Sequoia are not going to be accessible on any Intel Macs. To use these functions, you'll need a Mac with an M-series chip.

Certain iPads will miss out on iPadOS 18

Regrettably, these iPads won't be receiving the iPadOS update:

  • iPad (6th generation)
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation)
  • 10.5-inch iPad Pro

Importantly, the Apple Intelligence features of iPadOS 18 won't be available on all devices - you'll need an iPad with an M-series chip to utilize these capabilities.

Although these devices are no longer eligible for significant version upgrades, they may still receive essential security updates from Apple for some time.
