Innovations in science and engineering. - Apple introduces various AI features for the iPhone.
Apple is set to bring forth a slew of AI features for their iPhones and other devices on a grand scale. They made the announcement at the beginning of the developer conference WWDC. The purpose of these features is to cater to the individual requirements of users while maintaining the utmost level of data security, according to the iPhone manufacturer.
These functions will be ingrained within the operating systems of iPhone, Mac, and iPad, allowing Apple's AI models to access relevant user data for optimal use. Instead of the standard term Artificial Intelligence, Apple prefers to call it "Apple Intelligence."
Several models will operate on the devices themselves, while others will involve the cloud if needed, with a secure encryption connection. The Apple software decides whether a task should be performed locally or in the cloud on a case-by-case basis.
Apple's voice assistant Siri, which up until now appeared to be rather basic compared to chatbots like ChatGPT, will take on more responsibilities with the help of AI. For instance, users will be able to edit photos or add a new friend's address to their contacts list through voice commands using Siri.
"Genmoji" - customized emojis
One of the new features allows users to create personalized emojis while typing a text message. Apple named this function "Genmoji" - since it's generated with the aid of AI.
For example, the email app will now display a quick summary of the email's content, instead of the initial text lines in the preview. Since "Apple Intelligence" can comprehend the contents of emails and messages, the software can also identify if they are of importance and should be prioritized in the previews.
Access to ChatGPT
In addition to Apple's proprietary AI models, users will also have the option to use the chatbot ChatGPT from the company OpenAI if they choose. Siri could even suggest consulting ChatGPT for a specific request, assuming the chatbot has more information about that topic, according to Federighi.
At the annual WWDC conference, Apple presents an overview of the software and features that will be included in upcoming device generations set to be released later in the year.
