Apple effectively nullifies rivalry in the realm of headphones.

With the new AirPods 4, Apple has introduced earbuds catering to various needs. These Bluetooth earbuds perform well in practical tests, shining particularly with excellent audio quality. The ANC version provides impressive noise cancellation and an outstanding transparency mode.

Following a three-year hiatus, Apple has rolled out a redesigned fourth-gen variant in two options: ANC at approximately 200 euros and a non-ANC option around 150 euros. This means iPhone users have minimal incentive to turn to rival products for Bluetooth earbuds.

Enhanced Fit, Compact Charging Case

Apple subtly altered the contours of the now slimmer AirPods, making them more comfortable to wear. The adjustment may go unnoticed, as the earlier versions were barely perceptible, but they now appear to fit securely, even during vigorous movements.

The size of the charging case has also been reduced, allowing it to fit easily in a jeans pocket's coin pocket. A subtle yet significant change is the concealed LED, which is only visible when illuminated, and replaces the Bluetooth button on the case's back. To pair an unrecognized device, simply double-tap the LED when the lid is open.

Like the Pros, the case of the AirPods 4 now features a USB-C port. The ANC variant can be charged inductively, for example, using an Apple Watch dock. Moreover, only the ANC case will emit a sound when found via "Find My." Both the case and the earbuds are resistant to dust and water (IP54). The predecessor's (IPX4) usage required more caution.

Exceptional Sound

The AirPods have significantly upgraded their sound quality with the fourth generation. For open earbuds without sealing silicone tips, they deliver powerful bass that isn't overstated. The mid-range is well-defined and extensive. Clear highs complete the overall highly successful and delightfully open sound image. In the open earbud class, the AirPods 4 are now the standard-bearer.

The stage is already expansive in default settings, but you can now also activate Spatial Audio, like on the AirPods Pro. This enhances stereo content with added spatiality, but the new earbuds are particularly enjoyable when listening to movies or music with Dolby Atmos (3D Audio). When viewing videos, it's recommended to enable head tracking, which keeps the sound fixed even when you turn your head.

The LED becomes visible only when it emits light.

Apple's new H2 chip also enables head movements, allowing for nodding or shaking your head to accept or reject calls in response to Siri's prompt. It functions similarly for incoming messages.

Surprisingly Effective ANC

The ANC version of the AirPods 4 offers surprisingly effective noise cancellation. While it doesn't rival that of Apple's Pro earbuds, it effectively reduces consistent low-frequency noise in trains, planes, or busy streets. The effect does not negatively impact the sound. Currently, no other open earbud in this class can match this. The typical ANC hum is also minimal.

Almost no noise is audible in the excellent transparency mode. It sounds so natural that you feel like you're not wearing any earphones at all. In this category, the AirPods 4 (ANC) are unmatched.

You switch between modes by pressing the stem of the AirPods for a longer duration on the left or right. You can also opt for an adaptive mode, where the earphones automatically adjust ANC and transparency mode based on environmental noise. This worked well in tests, but in everyday life, this mode is less practical with open earphones. More practical is the conversation recognition feature, which reliably lowers playback volume when initiating a conversation.

Lack of Volume Control, Acceptable Battery Life

The control with one, two, or three presses is generally straightforward, but it has one drawback: You cannot adjust the volume by swiping the stems of the earphones like with AirPods Pro. You must still retrieve your iPhone or seek Siri's assistance.

Another minor disadvantage is the battery life. A maximum of four hours with ANC and five hours without are acceptable, but other Bluetooth earphones offer significantly longer battery life. With the charging case's battery reserves, you can attain up to 20 or 30 hours overall. Empty AirPods can still last nearly an hour after just five minutes in the box.

Other Bluetooth earbuds in the market might offer longer battery life, but for those who value other features over battery duration, the AirPods 4 are still a compelling choice. Additionally, users who prefer customizing their listening experience can explore various options aside from volume control, as the AirPods 4 offer a range of personalization features.
