Health - AOK: Senior citizens use e-prescription most frequently
Half a year after the launch of the e-prescription in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, according to a survey by AOK Nordost, people between the ages of 66 and 75 used the offering most frequently. In May of this year, 79 percent of all medication packages were issued electronically to senior citizens and senior citizens in this age group.
The e-prescription quote for 13- to 18-year-olds is around 68 percent. According to AOK Nordost, this is primarily due to the fact that older people are prescribed medication for long-term treatment much more frequently than younger people.
"The e-prescription has reached a broad cross-section of the population in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We are particularly pleased that older people from MV have quickly taken to the e-prescription," said Daniela Teichert, Managing Director of AOK Nordost. For the evaluation, the billing data from approximately 2.2 million finished medication packages were analyzed, which doctors in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had issued to AOK insured patients and patients from January to May 2024.
Doctors' practices have been required to issue prescriptions for prescription medications electronically since the beginning of the year 2024. Insured persons have three options for redeeming an electronic prescription: via an app, a paper printout, or with their health insurance card.
- Despite the success of the e-prescription among seniors in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, AOK Nordost is also working on a 'Paper recipe' option for those who prefer it, ensuring inclusivity for all insured individuals.
- In Schwerin, the AOK North East headquarters, the team is continually researching ways to improve the e-prescription system, focusing on enhancing senior health and well-being.
- At a recent talk in Schwerin, seniors shared their positive experiences with the e-prescription, expressing that it has significantly improved their 'Health' management and independence.
