The intended multicultural festivity turned into a tragic occasion. Currently, Solingen is engulfed in sorrow.

Anxiety and the driving force behind Solingen's actions

The community in Solingen is left reeling after an individual brutally attacks multiple individuals during a city festival on Saturday, resulting in several fatalities and injuries. After a day of fear and uncertainty, the suspected perpetrator is eventually apprehended. But the question on everyone's mind remains: Why did this happen, and why did the individual randomly attack the innocent celebrants at a peaceful community event?

The city of Solingen, with a population of 160,000, is grappling to come to terms with the horrific events of the previous day. Thousands of people, their faces etched with sorrow, congregate in the city center, carrying candles and symbols of consolation. City Dean Michael Mohr acknowledges the palpable sense of loss, stating, "The city isn't the same as it was yesterday. Words fail us; our gestures speak volumes."

Nestled between Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Wuppertal, Solingen has been thrust into the national spotlight. The aggressive incident took place on Friday evening at the city's 650th anniversary celebration, dubbed the "Festival of Diversity." In the early hours of Saturday, NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul arrives at the scene to investigate. Chancellor Olaf Scholz demands a severe punishment for the attacker, while political figures from across the country express their shock and disbelief, appreciating the efforts of the emergency services.

Wüst: Unyielding in the face of terror

Wüst aims to ensure that arrogance is not the response to terror. "Our country will not falter. We will not yield to fear and will diligently defend our way of life," he proclaims. Faeser echoes Wüst's sentiments, assuring the public that they will not succumb to divisions and presenting an united front against the travesty of such an unprovoked attack.

The authorities have yet to disclose the motive for the attacker's actions. The public prosecutor's office has mentioned a "preliminary suspicion of a terrorist motive," as no other rationale is currently apparent. According to Spiegel, the alleged perpetrator is a 26-year-old Syrian asylum seeker who has resided in Germany for less than two years.

IS identifies the attacker

On the evening of Saturday, the notorious terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) claims responsibility for the tragic knife attack. However, the veracity of IS' claim remains a matter of investigation. There is uncertainty as to whether the alleged attacker had any ties to the Sunni terrorist organization. Islamic State has previously taken credit for attacks without substantial evidence of its involvement.

Two men aged 67 and 56, and a 56-year-old woman, lost their lives in the strike. In the aftermath, the alleged attacker seems to have disappeared amidst the chaos. A 15-year-old is later apprehended, but not for a specific reason; he may have shared words with the attacker before the incident. Initially, the perpetrator remains absent with no known photograph or police surveillance footage from the scene.

Fear spreads with dread

Fear hangs heavy in the air of Solingen even a day later. "I informed my husband that we can't go where there are numerous people anymore," says an elderly woman who has lived near the scene for decades. Unpredictably, a knife could strike at any moment. "You have to be afraid," she says with a heavy heart. Another resident expresses resignation, "Solingen seems to be constantly in the headlines." This is a sentiment often repeated within the city.

Tragic events have recently plagued Solingen as well. Four individuals died in a house fire in March, allegedly set by a disgruntled former tenant. A man sustained fatal injuries in front of a Solingen business in June after dropping a container with an explosive substance. There are suspicions that this incident may be linked to the activities of the so-called Dutch Mocro-mafia, a group that has caused concern in NRW for weeks.

Stricter gun control legislation demanded

Not only Solingen will be forced to address the latest events in some manner; they will also fuel political discussions throughout Germany. In recent weeks, Federal Minister of the Interior Faeser has proposed stricter gun control laws, but the controversy surrounding such changes remains. Additionally, state elections in Saxony and Thuringia are scheduled for next week.

Shaken to her core, Solingen's Mayor Tim Kurzbach expresses her condolences the day after the incident, battling to find the words to address the horrible ordeal. "Despite the passing hours, it remains difficult to find the correct words," she says in the presence of high-ranking federal and state politicians. Speaking to the families that have suffered loss and the witnesses to the horrific attack, the gravity of the situation becomes more apparent by the minute. "The pain cuts deep," she concludes.

The residents of Solingen call for stronger security measures in light of the recent events. They believe that stricter measures are necessary to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Other communities across Germany express their solidarity with Solingen, offering words of comfort and support during this difficult time. They emphasize the importance of unity and resilience in the face of adversity.
