In Bavaria, authorities made a heartbreaking find in a canal in Swabia - an elderly woman's lifeless body. This came after she was reported missing on Sunday.
The death toll from the flood in Bavaria has risen to four, reports show. A 79-year-old woman was found deceased in the Mindel Canal in Swabia, police stated. She'd been missing in Jettingen-Scheppach, a town between Augsburg and Ulm, since Sunday. Moreover, at least six people have lost their lives in South Germany due to the flood, and four of these were in Bavaria.
The Bavarian Interior Ministry revealed that several individuals are still unaccounted for, including a 22-year-old firefighter in Swabia. The number of missing persons has seen fluctuations recently.
The police spokesperson mentioned that a witness saw the woman near the Mindel River in the afternoon of Sunday. The 79-year-old woman was apparently cycling to the river when her trail vanished, said the spokesperson. Police explored various potential locations and questioned family members - all to no avail. A police helicopter was also deployed for the search of the 79-year-old lady.
An occupant discovered the woman's lifeless body in the Mindel Canal in Jettingen-Scheppach on Wednesday. The identity of the missing person was confirmed. No signs of suspicious activity have emerged in this case, police added. The Criminal Investigation Department in Neu-Ulm is now tackling the case to determine the exact circumstances of the woman's demise.
