Berlin - Another cable theft leads to restrictions on U3
Due to a cable theft at Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG ), there have been restrictions on the U3 subway line since Friday. "To prevent overcrowding, trains cannot currently run as frequently as usual during rush hour," the BVG announced. "The U3 has been running every 10 minutes on the section between Breitenbachplatz and Krumme Lanke since midday on Friday." Experts are in the process of repairing the damage. The repairs and thus the reduced frequency are expected to last until after the Christmas holidays.
According to the BVG, unknown persons have stolen around 140 meters of cable in the above-ground section of the U3 between the stations Freie Universität - Thielplatz and Oskar-Helene-Heim. Cable theft is a recurring problem at BVG. It was only at the end of November that such a crime on the U6 line led to restrictions that also lasted several days.
"These crimes are driven by the increased commodity prices on the market," said BVG Operations Director Rolf Erfurt on Friday. The perpetrators are usually professionals who know exactly which cables are live and which are not. "In most cases, the cables are then cut into small pieces so that they can be easily removed." Erfurt estimates that the BVG has suffered millions in damage this year as a result of cable thefts. "Unfortunately, we can't be everywhere in the network. But we are continuing to equip our forces for such cases, for example with night vision devices."
