Another attack on ship in the Red Sea
Another attack on a ship allegedly linked to Israel. Unknown persons are said to have taken control of the "Central Park" in the Red Sea. The Houthi rebels from Yemen had previously threatened such an attack. They see themselves as part of an "axis" fighting against Israel.
In the Red Sea, an oil tanker belonging to a British company with ties to Israel was captured by armed attackers. There are "indications that an unknown number of armed individuals took control of the 'M/V Central Park' in the Gulf of Aden on November 26," a US naval representative said. On Saturday, the US military had already spoken of an attack on another Israeli ship in the Indian Ocean.
US troops and their allies were "in the vicinity" and were monitoring the situation "closely", it was said regarding the capture of the oil tanker. The maritime security company Ambrey stated that "US naval forces are involved in the situation" after the ship "Central Park" was captured off the coast of the Yemeni port city of Aden. According to Ambrey, the tanker belongs to a UK-based company with ties to Israel. The pro-Iranian Huthi rebels in Yemen had previously threatened to attack the tanker if it did not divert to the port of Hodeidah, it was reported.
The incident occurred two days after an Israeli ship in the Indian Ocean was allegedly attacked by Iran. According to a US military representative, the USA had information that "a Shahed 136 drone struck a ship in the Indian Ocean". The ship, which is said to belong to an Israeli businessman, was slightly damaged on Friday. However, there were no casualties on board. Drones of the Schahed 136 type are part of the arsenal of the Iranian armed forces - which points to an Iranian attack.
Axis with Iran and Hezbollah
According to Ambrey, the ship attacked on Friday was a "Maltese-flagged container ship", and the operator is a French company. Prior to the attack, transmissions to locate the ship were interrupted shortly after it left the port of Jebel Ali in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
The increased incidents over the weekend followed threats by the pro-Iranian Huthi militia in Yemen to attack Israeli ships and ships of Israel's allies sailing in the Red Sea. Last Sunday, a Houthi spokesperson stated that the Iranian-backed Shiite militant group had captured a ship in the Red Sea and brought it to the Yemeni coast.
The Houthi militia sees itself as part of the self-proclaimed "Axis of Resistance" directed against Israel. This also includes other groups supported by Iran, such as the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas and the Shiite Islamist Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas in response to the latter's brutal attack on Israeli territory, the Houthis have fired drones and missiles at Israel on several occasions, which were intercepted by Israeli air defenses and US warships.
- The Houthi rebels, seen as part of an "axis" opposing Israel, had previously threatened to attack ships in the Red Sea, including those with ties to Israel.
- The US military reported an attack on another Israeli ship in the Indian Ocean, which allegedly involved an Iranian-made drone.
- The pro-Iranian Houthi rebels threatened to attack Israeli and allied ships in the Red Sea if they failed to divert to the Hodeidah port, as previously reported.
- The Middle East conflict, involving Israel, Palestinians, and regional allies such as Iran and Hezbollah, has led to increased tension and threats of attacks against shipping in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
