Ampel meets on Wednesday for coalition committee

Consultations "in full swing"

Ampel meets on Wednesday for coalition committee

On Wednesday, the coalition parties will discuss the 2024 budget in a coalition committee with the aim of adopting it this year. How this is to be achieved is currently unclear.

Representatives of the coalition parties will meet for a coalition committee tomorrow evening. RTL/ntv learned this from government circles. No decisions are planned, they said.

The central topic of the meeting between the three parties will be discussions on the 2024 budget. The coalition is aiming to pass the budget before the end of this year. This will require drastic savings, which will be discussed on Wednesday evening.

According to a budget politician from the coalition ranks, the aim is to develop an understanding for the views of the other parliamentary groups. Negotiations on next year's budget were already "in full swing". The initial shock of the ruling has "almost been digested", said another member of one of the government factions.

On November 15, the Federal Constitutional Court ruled that the reallocation of 60 billion euros was unconstitutional following a complaint by the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. This money will be missing proportionately this year and in the coming years. The coalition in the Bundestag wants to adopt a supplementary budget for the current year and establish an "extraordinary emergency situation", which would allow an exception to the debt brake.

It is still unclear on what basis the 2024 budget will be decided. CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz has threatened to take the matter to the Federal Constitutional Court again if the coalition avoids the debt brake for 2024 as well.

The coalition parties, in their Traffic light coalition committee meeting on Wednesday, will deliberate on the budget policy for 2024 with the aim of adopting it before the German Bundestag's year-end. The absence of the 60 billion euros, ruled unconstitutional by the Federal Constitutional Court, complicates this task.
