Amidst grave concerns, Ukraine anticipates potentially its most devastating winter ever.

Ukraine is bracing for a tough and gloomy winter due to substantial damage to its power and energy systems caused by Russian assaults. "We're dealing with the sternest winter in our history," says Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko during a video conference. This winter is anticipated to be even more grueling than the previous one due to the accumulating damage from continued Russian attacks, he mentions. The Russian military is using a diverse assortment of weapons in simultaneous attacks to inflict maximum damage, Haluschenko states. In a moderate winter, electricity consumption averages 18 gigawatts, whereas in a severe winter, it surges to 19 gigawatts. Furthermore, a reserve of one gigawatt must be established, according to Haluschenko. Russian attacks have demolished roughly 9 gigawatts of capacity.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck hopes that more Ukrainian refugees in Germany will secure employment. Although family-related extenuating circumstances, illness, war trauma, or essential childcare may preclude someone from working, Habeck indicates, "However, in general, working is beneficial for everyone – it's better for the people, for their integration, and for the social system." Habeck is skeptical of statements by Brandenburg's Minister-President and SPD politician Dietmar Woidke, who raised doubts about the allowance for Ukrainian refugees. "This is likely a consequence of the somewhat hectic eastern German election campaigns and may not have been carefully considered," Habeck says.
