Bees - American loafers identified in Cham district, Germany

In the Bavarian Landkreis Cham, a case of American Foulbrood in Bees has occurred. According to the Landratsamt Cham, the pathogen was identified in a beehive in the community of Wald. The finding was confirmed by the Landesamt für Gesundheit und Lebensmittelsicherheit in Erlangen on a Wednesday. Therefore, there is no risk to humans; honey can still be consumed.

To contain the disease and prevent further spread, strict measures have been taken around the affected beehive. The Landratsamt Cham has established a quarantine zone with a radius of approximately 4.5 kilometers around the outbreak site, which includes parts of the communities Falkenstein, Wald, and Zell.

Within the quarantine zone, there is an inspection requirement for all bee colonies. It is also forbidden to remove bee colonies or bees from their location, as well as bee products or equipment. Beekeepers within the quarantine zone are required to report their beehives to the Landratsamt Cham.

The affected beehive is located in the Bavarian district of Cham, specifically in the community of Wald. This incident is not limited to Wald alone, as the District Office of Cham has established a quarantine zone in nearby areas, such as Falkenstein and Zell. Despite the disease outbreak, locals can still enjoy the food produced in the Upper Palatinate region, including honey, as it poses no risk to humans.
