- American immunologist Fauci is currently battling West Nile virus.

Prominent American immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci has been infected with West Nile virus. After being hospitalized for six days, the 83-year-old is now recuperating at home, as reported by CNN and The New York Times, citing a spokesperson for Fauci. They predict a complete recovery.

Veteran in infectious disease research

Dr. Fauci resigned from his role as the White House's top medical advisor and director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases almost two years ago. Previously, he had become a pivotal figure in the United States' battle against COVID-19. This distinguished scientist has led the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases for nearly four decades and has worked under a total of seven U.S. presidents.

He is renowned as one of the most prominent infectious disease experts in the U.S., known not just within academic circles but also abroad. In the highly charged debates surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Fauci was a frequent target of criticism and attacks.

The West Nile virus usually causes no significant harm

The West Nile virus originates in Africa and is transmitted via mosquito bites. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), most infections are symptomless, with about 20% of infected individuals developing a feverish, influenza-like illness that lasts a few days, and about 1% developing encephalitis or meningitis. At present, there is no vaccination available for humans.

The virus was discovered in Germany for the first time in 2018, and in a human for the first time in 2019. Regular detections occur, particularly in eastern Germany, with experts anticipating further spread due to climate change. Larger outbreaks have been recorded in southern and southeastern European countries for years.

Dr. Fauci's infection was with the West Nile virus, which is known for usually causing no significant harm in most individuals. Despite being mainly symptomless, about 20% of infected individuals can develop a feverish, influenza-like illness.
