After a serious outbreak - All-clear at Lake Garda - water drinkable again

Caution at Lake Garda: The danger of further gastrointestinal illnesses caused by Norovirus, according to Italian authorities' estimation, has been halted. In the municipality of Torri del Benaco on the eastern shore of Italy's largest lake, the tap water can now be drunk again. Mayor Stefano Nicotra lifted the corresponding ban, which he had issued due to the illness of over 1000 residents and tourists.

The exact cause of the virus outbreak is still unknown. According to the authorities, no traces of the Norovirus have been detected in the water supply in the region at present. Previously, over 300 people had to be treated in the hospital with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Others had to go to the toilet or the doctor repeatedly.

In the popular region with many German tourists, the outbreak caused concerns that tourism could suffer heavy damage during the peak season. Local officials were working to allay the fears of tourists: The mayor of the Garda Lake municipality of Brenzone, Paolo Formaggioni, even drank a glass of water directly from the lake and said "Cheers".

Due to the illnesses, the municipality of Torri del Benaco issued a decree over the weekend banning the consumption of tap water. It was recommended to buy water in the supermarket. In Italian newspapers, it is being speculated that the outbreak may be related to the currently very high water level of Lake Garda due to heavy rainfall. There was no confirmation from official sources.

The highly contagious Norovirus causes a sudden, violent bout of diarrhea. The symptoms usually subside after half a day to two days.

  1. Despite the halt in Norovirus-related illnesses at Lake Garda, some travelers might still feel uneasy about their upcoming vacations in Italy, especially considering the recent virus breakout that affected many German tourists.
  2. If you're planning a vacation in Germany and are considering Lake Garda as a destination, it's important to stay updated on the latest health advisories regarding diseases like Norovirus, which can potentially impact travel and tourism.
  3. Even though the water in Torri del Benaco is now safe to drink, some travelers might opt for alternative sources to avoid any potential health risks related to the virus outbreak that originally occurred near Lake Garda in Italy.
  4. Despite the impact of the virus outbreak on Lake Garda's tourism, it remains an appealing destination for travelers, with its natural beauty and rich cultural offerings that are still attracting visitors from Europe, including Germany.
  5. Since the virus outbreak, authorities and local officials have been working diligently to ensure the health and safety of residents and tourists in the popular Italian lake region, implementing measures such as water testing and public health advisories.
